I found a great patch of graffiti on the streets of Florence right before we left. This building looked like a kids school based on a bike rack full of tiny bikes. There was some well crafted graffiti pieces that were carelessly vandalized with a single black line through some of them. Right next to this building was a street underpass that was covered with some amazing characters and lettering. Kim refused to go through this area at night, but she let me come back the next day after I threw a temper tantrum.

My view of France was very small. I stopped in two towns along the Mediterranean – Antibes/Juan de la Pain and Cassis. Neither was a street art mecca by any stretch. Marseille had some incredible graffiti surrounding the train station – but from a moving train I couldn’t capture any of the amazing work. Here is what I did get.

I frequently get asked about my process. Here is a little documentation of a piece I have going now.

July 2010: This canvas has seen many places with a few different faces. The “GOLDEN STEEZ” as seen below hung in the hollywood district for quite a few months.

August 2011: Random Jager bottle ends up with a STEEZ Tattoo also.

August 2011: Jager STEEZ gets smashed for a new explosive canvas. Incidentally, usually I come out of these injury free. This Jager bottle got a good slice of my thumb. I was told it should have had stitches. I grabbed a beer, panicked a little bit and moved on with the work.

Aug. 2011: The broken glass gets glued to the canvas with a combination of hot glue and an excessive amount of paint. I buy the mis-tint paint at Lowes/Home Depot so I can use it with reckless abandon. Usually I paint over it so the color doesn’t matter. However, the way this looks currently I’m kind of inspired.

Formic Media Graffiti Installation

Formic Media, a local Portland SEM firm, built a fantastic rotating display for a 3D art installation when they built their new building a few years ago. This building is already home to one of my favorite abstract paintings in the common lobby (see here). For this installation, we went a different direction.

The inspiration for this installation was a graffiti street scene. I started with 8 wood panels – made by Mr. Jeff the Canvas man, then added drywall mud to create the brick surface. I added conduit, electrical distribution, hose bibs and a window frame to really create the feeling and look of an alleyway. I mis-aligned the panels and used different sizes to further the unique and uneven display.

Penguins

Lately I have been working towards developing a character to include with some of my graffiti work. Erik and John are the first to own some of the penguins, I love the way this little scene turned out and I think we’ll be continuing on with more penguins in the garage.

Alberta Art Hop Live Graffiti Paint

This post represents how busy I have been lately. This live paint exhibit took place in May, the piece was hung over on Killingsworth and 30th for the month of June and only now is it making it to the Blog. I collaborated with Art Not Crime‘s DeAngelo Raines – proud new father and coordinator of the live paint exhibition on Alberta. I painted the STEEZ lettering, and he did his trademark Ghetto Blaster. I forget the other artists names on the second piece, but I sure do like it!

The Alchemist is an independent weekly publication that promotes the minds and art of the residents of Corvallis. I have been fortunate enough to be featured on two different covers for my murals in corvallis and was recently asked to paint a newstand for the budding publication.
